Playground has brought in a new playmate, the iPCam 100. It’s a small surveillance device designed for home use.
The iPCam 100’s battle cry is “Eyes and ears everywhere,” but the device itself cannot be controlled remotely. It just stands wherever it has been placed or hanged on. However, we were surprised how clear the images appeared on our desktop and mobile devices. It’s hard to determine how many mega pixels the camera has, since in the box it only says “Mega Pixels.”
It takes up space from your computer’s hard drive. Likewise, it has an SD card slot as an alternative. These days, storage spaces are plenty as SD cards amounting up to 128GB exists.
It features remote access, where users will be able to live view from a different desktop, by heading to “starvedia.” The PlaygroundView is a downloadable app from the App and Play Store.
The mic worked better than any of us had hoped . There is a second or two delay between audio transmissions, but that’s perfectly acceptable, considering how clear the videos are displayed.
However, the device has too many active lights while plugged it. It gives anyone a shout out “Hey, you’re being watched!” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But we would have preferred a more subtle approach to monitor your area. It also says in the box that it’s a plug and play device, but when using it for the desktop, users will need to install the CamView software that comes along with it. From there, any iPCam 100s connected to the same network will be detected.
Another thing we noticed is that the camera heats up after a couple of minutes being plugged in. We don’t think it will burn down the house when plugged for days. But just to be safe, we recommend plugging it only when users are away from home or sleeping at night, soit can keep watch .
Playground iPCam 100 is a nice device to have around, if needed. It’s not something that can be used to keep a serious look out for massive establishments. But we felt the device will come in handier in smaller businesses and for personal home use.
